[Holistic Healing] Bodywork Therapy

QiGong is a term that means “energy work” (气功) and is sometimes referred to as “bodywork therapy.”

QiGong involves a unique style of body movement and exercises dating back thousands of years. QiGong is done primarily from a standing position. Its history includes several different schools of thought; many of which address different ailments in the body.

Most QiGong practitioners emphasize the health benefits that can be acquired from QiGong. At UTCM, we also recognize the advantages to the body from treatment based in the martial arts.

Benefits
of QiGong

At its roots, Qigong guides patients to channel their willpower into energy that is released through the palms of their hands. Specialized breathing techniques in conjunction with specific hand coordinations help to unite the function of the eyes with the movements of the body and the concentration of the mind to provide balance and unity.

1. Breath

Energy from your breath moves between the meridians in the body. This energy works in connection with the nutrition a patient eats to help heal the body. The bridge formed between concentrated breathing and specific coordinated body movements helps to free areas of the body that are currently blocked, allowing the Qi unrestricted passage through the pathways.

2. Posture

Posture is an important component in preparing the body for the optimal flow of Qi. Part of the UTCM bodywork therapy includes a series of specific exercises designed to improve the circulation of energy to provide tangible increases in daily vitality and good health.

3. Movement

There are several specialized exercises that are employed during the practice of Qigong. Each component is designed to free any blocked pathways to encourage optimal energy flow. Many of these movements touch the top of outer energy fields to redirect the Qi to the portions of the body in need of healing. Some of the exercises can be very physically demanding.

4. Relaxation

A body that is tense naturally obstructs the optimal flow of energy. Qigong directs patients to allow the body to release itself from stress and pressure and to exist only in the moment. To assist with this, the mind can be directed to movements of the hands, creating a united bond to promote the proper flow of Qi to achieve wellness and healing.

5. Concentration/Visualization

It is an ancient Taoist belief that the eyes are the passageway from the outer world into the heart of man. It is through this portal that the spirit known as shen gains its access, and through this, Qi may follow. With this in mind, the eyes form the link for the spirit to channel the direction of the energy that enters the body. This aspect of Qigong also involves the moving of negative energies from within to outside the body to encourage health and healing.

First visit Your First Visit

At your first visit to UTCM, we will take the opportunity to listen to your concerns and health goals. After performing a holistic assessment, we will assess the causes of your health concerns and recommend a treatment plan tailored for your situation.

1. Health Questionnaire

The first visit to UTCM will involve a detailed questionnaire to help the practitioner to best understand any underlying health problems, the patient’s past medical history, and their current lifestyle. This step of the process is critical to developing a plan to treat the conditions from which the patient is seeking relief.

2. Pre-Treatment Testing

Following taking a thorough patient history, some people will require further pre-treatment testing from the UTCM clinic or a physician that specializes in traditional medicine. These tests help to determine the severity of any health conditions as well as a patient’s suitability for treatment.

3. Physical Examination

A physical examination is sometimes required. This most typically includes assessment of vital signs, basic kinesiology of the body, the palpation of areas requiring specific treatment, and examination of the condition of the tongue. The patient’s resting pulse rate will also be measured.
